Yesterday, 1st of March, 2012 was an Open Day for parents to visit their wards in Basit's School, and we did visit Basit, the 10 year old boy whom we hope to sponsor his primary education from basic 1 to Basic 7. God helping us..:/

The good thing is that Basit is improving academically, Now, he can read the alphabets from A-Z unlike the first time we met him! And, he can communicate in English Language with his friends and teacher. He aspires to be a Medical Doctor.

We wish luck in his pursuit.

Education Sponsorship Project: More updates..

On 25th of February, the sum of N3,000 was awarded to one of the beneficiaries of our Education Sponsorship Scheme for the purchase and registration for JAMB examinations.The good news again is that out of the three disadvantaged kids we wished to enrol into primary school, one of them has been gainfully admitted into a private nursery and primary school in his surburb. Huge thanks to our Donors and friends especially Ms. Dapo O. who has signified interest in self-sponsoring the education program of our little friend from Nursery through Primary School. Thanking you, for your good interest.Yeah! We all are in this together, putting smile on the faces of the less priviledged young people is our goal.Thank You!

The photographs shows our visit to some schools to donate school bags, School Socks, Educational Toys and Pictorial Wall Charts. It was a lovely experience as meeting with lovely, and blessed kids. ..sending our prayers to one of our little friend Tijani who lost his mum at birth, and Adijat whose mum's been seriously ill in the hospital. May God heal them in Jesus name. Amen. #These students were part of the beneficiaries of our gift items.

howbeit, Our Goal: is to send this little 10year old boy to school. And, we need every assistance to make this possible! Also, we would need books, stationary, School bag and a Pack of Noodles to give to our young friend. :)

It's the 25th of January, 2011 and we are pleased to inform you all that we have been able to sponsor the 2012 WAEC registration of two disadvantaged girls. The examination starts in April...

Uche is 26year old woman, who has got a strong determination to go to school despite the many difficulties that betides her. She is the only girl in a family of 6, She lives with her single mother who is a petty trader, whose daily income is not enough to put meal on the table, hence for a long time now, Uche has been compelled to assist her mother in her shop. She has been warned to forget the idea of EVER going to school -Because mama has no money to pay!

Fortunately, we met with Uche, and decided to pay her education bills. Thanks to our Friends, Donors. Now, She has been registered with a private school in Lagos, and she hopes to write the next WAEC examination in May/June.

Our Second Beneficiary is Kate! who dropped out of school 2years back when she couldn't meet up with the demand in school because her daddy went a missing. It's pathetic that up till date, her father who has been responsible for her schooling has not been found... :). When we met with her last year, she did narrate to us her ordeal, and how her mum, out of desperation wanted her to get married in December...so she could be of help to her family.

A Mentee That Truly Inspires...

Michael : A Mentee that inspires greatly…

I remember meeting this young man some years ago. It was my first visit to a public school not too far away from my working place. With the aim of mentoring young people in the neighbourhood where I worked, I moved from one school to the other, making friends with young people. It’s exactly three years ago, since I met with Michael , and other interesting young people who have topped my list of youths with great minds. Michael was the head prefect in his set, and one of the brilliant students who devotes time to school and academic works. He was introduced to me by
the School Counselor. His passion for what he believes in is really intriguing, I remember the first time he told me he aspires to be a “Farmer”. And, that he hopes to study Agriculture at the University of Abeokuta. Hearing that from him was like waking up from a “bad dream” (smiles). “not from a brilliant chap who has got what it takes to study Medicine, Law, Accountancy etc, why Agriculture!?…I muttered” the good thing was that, Michael wouldn’t bulge by what people say or be dissuaded by others view of his course of choice. He was simply determined to study AGRICULTURE. He had a reason and a vision why he chose Agriculture.

In 2009, he graduated with the best result from Opebi Grammar School, and was selected for an award as one of the students with best result in Education District IV, Oshodi, Lagos State.

In 2010, he scored hundred and ninety (290/400) in JAMB. A very rare output and this prompted JAMB officials to contact Michael ’s Principal for interrogations to ascertain if he was brilliant enough for obtain such academic feat!

In recent years, he was paired with a “Big Brother” Mentor Olaniyi who truly took him as a little brother. Michael got this to say about his Mentoring experience:

“My destiny would not have been completed had I not had contact with RSN because they have helped to mould me into what I am today....if there is anything I have learnt from my mentor, I say two things 1. He has unknowingly taught me to be a giver, I did not know until my friend reacted to my behavior. He has taught me the meaning of "Resource Sharing Network" 2. Secondly he has been there to encourage and celebrate with me in almost every time I can't say I have been the best Mentee but am truly grateful to GOD for Mr. Olaniyi and Mrs. Tosin Taiwo and in general RSN”

Today, Michael is a 200-Level undergraduate, studying Agriculture at the University of Abeokuta.Despite the many challenges, he strives on, excelling in his class with a cumulative GPA of 4.0. Once again, let me use this medium to extend a profound gratitude to people who have supported our works financially, most times, funds received are extended to young people like Michael who need some push ups.

RSN donates Knitted wears to kids in the Orphanage~

On 8th of December, 2011! we made our first "Charity Visit" to a motherless home in Surulere suburb. It is a home for special kids with disabilities, neurological disorder etc.

Indeed, it was a memorable experience as we shared some time with the kids...though we donated to them some knitted wears, however, we wished we could do much more to alleviate the sufferings of these young kids...with autism, down syndrome, disabilities etc. We love you, and we'd always keep you in our prayers. God bless you.

Also, a huge thanks to our friend and donor, Ms. Tolulope Ochonogor for making this visit worth it, we look forward to our next visit....next week~ :)

Good Day All,

We hope you are faring greatly. Wishing you greatness, always~

Once again, we appreciate everyone who have contributed to our
existence! Thank you for everything... God bless you.

This year, in order to EVALUATE our works and mentorship practice, we
shall not be pairing the youths with anyone, this implies that there
shall be no Mentoring Programme for 2011/2012 session. We intend to do
a follow up on all of our past Mentees-Mentors Relationship, and this
shall be achieved through phonecalls to Youths, Mentors, Visitations
etc. We really want to know how the youths are faring and how much of
their academic visions has been achieved. More details shall be
convened to you as we proceed.

#All other youth events shall be thoroughly executed in due season

The past few weeks has been exciting moment has we kick started our First Summer Vocational School for young people within the age range 9-18years. Thus far, the kids/youths have been able to acquire the following skills: Hand Knitting, Machine Knitting, Art of Photography and -Typewriting!!! It's been an inspiring and fun-filled session.

While we were able to obtain the GCE form for Twenty-One (21) students last year through your concerted efforts. This year, we've been able to support Nine(9) students who met our *criteria...out of eighteen applicants!

Free Summer Training
This summer, we have decided to train 15-30 disadvantaged youths on vocational skills such as knitting etc. Hopefully, we shall kick off in August 15th, 2011...:)

Close of 2010 Youth Mentoring Scheme…
As the 2010 Youth Mentoring Scheme comes to an end this week, we hope our Volunteer Mentors had pleasant time with their Mentees…? Really, we would appreciate it immensely if YOU COULD SEND US FEEDBACK of your memorable time together and your achievements etc. with photographs (if any).

We Need Your Support…
Lastly, there are some students who need sponsorship to write this year GCE exams, and we would appreciate every support we can get to add up. GCE Application form costs N5,900 with Registration Process of N500. Deadline is next month –JULY, 2011. Interestingly, we got an organisation (A Ray of Hope, UK) that is willing to donate $10 (ten dollars) for every $10 donation that we receive for our projects. Hence, we look forward to your donation for this multiplier effect…

Follow Up News…
Some of our Mentees & beneficiaries of the GCE exams, did write the recent JAMB exam, and thus far, they are progressing well with aggregate score of 241, 195, 292, 202 etc.

Until last year Oluwadamilare has been out of school for more than 2years due to financial reasons, without much hope of writing WAEC exams. However, with the Financial assitance received from Mrs. Tee(who would always want to remain anonymous...). Damilare got back to School, registered as an external Candidate with a Private School inLagos, Had all his Practical & Tutorial Classes paid for...in preparation for the exams.

What About Us? ....Sex Education for the BOYS!!!

Last week, we had a seminar for our girls on Sex Education. And, really it was a thrilling moment...meeting and discussing with young girls about things that matters, about their reproductive health, emotional relation, sexuality etc. It was an educative time....time to learn and be thought on the ills of our society regarding the menace of sexual abuse etc. I thought the ladies need this seminar more, until I received a message from a friend: "GOOD ONE. WHEN WILL THE MEN HAVE DRE OWN CLASS? BOYS ARE ABUSED TOO (LOL). BELIEVE ME IT DOES HAPPEN.THE LORD IS YOUR STRENGTH" Now, having the male session is on my mind....where do we start? Lol... Last year, Tope, a young lady was one of our GCEbeneficiaries.....Having lost her dad some years back, she and her 3siblings lives with their mum (a trader) and thus far, life has been so challenging. She wrote the WAEC exam once without enough fund towrite NECO...there and then, she was refereed to us and we decided tosponsor her next exam- 2010... GCE. Having made only 1paper in herprevious exams. At first, we were skeptical if she was going to passher next exam, and in our own human thinking we imagined that it mightbe a waste of resources sponsoring such a student. Alas, we decided tohelp But, were proved wrong by God! Who knows & sees the heart of allmen.

Now, that the result of the exam's out, this young lady had incredibleresult!! Still the best result so far of all the 21 students that wesponsorsed...She dazzed us...!

Another young man...a beneficiary, also made all his papers! No single subject did he fail. He got credits and distinction! Actually, thiswas a young man who's had difficult challenges and had to resolve tofending for himself and family. But, in his eyes you see strongdetermination & eagerness to study more.... The last time I saw him,he was on his way to a building construction site where he works as alabourer...moulding concrete blocks, carrying sand etc. Now, he's aFREE man! Having made all of his papers at last...we're so so happyfor him and hope he get admitted to a college soon...-realising his dream!

RSN Team wish you a happy, healthy and prosperous new year! At RSN, we believe that every New Year presents us a unique opportunity to touch the life of youths from difficult background through our sponsorship, tutoring and mentoring approach.

Last year we daringly sponsored the exams of some (21) disadvantaged youths and paired over 15 students with Young Professionals as Mentors, building their self-confidence, making great social impact. And, we had a great response from mentors across the globe to support
the project. Thanking you with smiles....:).

In 2011 we are stepping out to creating mini Resource Centers in Lagos, Nigeria for young people to learn and to connect with their Mentors online (truly, this has been one of our greatest challenges and we hope to overcome it this year. We humbly apologize to our volunteer mentors abroad who haven't been paired with a mentee, yet. It's plainly due to lack of proper means of communication with these kids -some of them are without phone and easy access to the internet). Hence, we hope that with the establishment of a Resource Center, things are gonna be better....:)

Not until two days ago, was I informed that our last event on mentoring orientation programme for secondary school students got featured in one of our National Dailies... I feel great and humbled!!! Thanks to Aunty Joke -the Online Editor for a job well done. Today, reading through our story in THE NATION newspaper dated 22nd of November, 2010 on Page 24, gladdens my heart; the picture tells alot about students who dare to dream....we cannot but continually wish them all the very best in their endeavours...:)

YOUTHS MENTORING ORIENTATION PROGRAMME FOR SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS, LAGOS STATE HELD ON THE 6TH OF NOVEMBER, 2010 AT SWEET SENSATION HALL, OPEBI, IKEJA, LAGOS STATE.

The program started at around 12:45pm with an opening prayer by Mr. Oshevire Onofe after which the welcome address was taken by Mrs. Tosin the Founder of the Organization. She stated the objectives of the organization which is to help improve on the academic performances of students writing the WAEC examination. In recent times, the West African Examination result has been devastating as higher percentage of Nigerian youths fail this exam yearly. In 2008, she stated that 85% of SSS 3 students failed English Language and Mathematics, etc. Also, this year, 2010, statistics has it that 79% failed to pass English Language!

Hence, the essence of this Youths Mentoring Scheme is to yearly pair some of these youths in SSS 3 classes with young professionals from different sectors only with the aim of improving on their academic performances and morals… thus far, the organization has reached out to more than 5000 students in their respective schools through her Career Seminar Initiative and Mentoring Program.

Guest Speakers at the event include:
• Mr. John Ekundayo from Malaysia
• Mr. Tunde Adeleye –UK Certified Educationist
• Mrs. Olubola Adeleye – Motivational Speaker (UK)
• Engr. Zaidan Khalifat –ARIK Air

Mrs. Olubola Adeleye is a UK Qualified Mortgage, Loans and Insurance Broker; she spoke on “The Art of Mentoring” where she pointed out the benefits of mentoring. She regretted that it was quite unfortunate that most of them never had an opportunity like this to be mentored by young professionals. Maybe if they were guided and instructed by a Mentor while growing up, their lives would have been a lot better!

Mr. Tunde, who is a UK Certified Educationist, spoke extensively on the need to reform our educational system in Nigeria. He admonished teachers and parents to help their kids think independently. He opined that one of the major problems we have in various schools in Nigeria is that most teachers only tell the student “What to think” and not “How to think”. We’ve been forced to accept teacher’s ideologies without arguments or disapproval. And, this has greatly affecting us. It has made learning not to be enjoyed but endured. Also, he stated that there is need for teachers to set Targets for their students in various Subjects just as we have it in the banking system and also reward those who meet up with the standards. He said that this would motivate the student to work harder and meet up with the raised standards.

Engr. Zaidan from ARIK Air, during his speech admonished the participants to love their Country, for we cannot improve on a country we do not love. He advised the youths to believe in themselves, be creative and set plans for their future.

Mr. John Ekundayo, a COREN registered engineer and Organizational Leadership Graduate from the Monash University, Australia addressed the participants on “Attaining Academic Excellence: Our Collective Responsibilities”. He spoke on the need to have S.M.A.R.T goals, i.e. Simple, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-Bound goals. The essentiality of time-management and hardwork was emphasized by the speaker as this would help the students to attain distinctive excellence in their works.

Lastly, Mr Adewale Adebusoye, a young professional and Computer Science M.Sc holder from Netherlands motivated the youths by sharing his personal life experiences as a youth. He encouraged the youths to hold on to their dreams and never give up.

Other highlights of the day, include: Discussant Group by Past Mentors, Presentation of Awards to 2009 Most Well-Behaved Mentee was given to Farouk Tackie an ex-student of Opebi Grammar School, Ikeja; While Oshovire Onofe went home with the 2009 Best Mentee trophy. However, 2009 Best Mentors, went to Mr. Tunde Majiyagbe (UBA) and Mrs. Taiye Falolu of Standard Chartered Bank, both of these mentors have demonstrated high level of commitment to the mentoring schemes. And, have supported their Mentees immensely.

It was indeed mind-blowing moments…

Why We Needed to Visit.....

Yesterday, was such an awesome day for all of us who visited high school students within the metropolis of Lagos.

It was such a refreshing time, as "Le Dynamique Professeur" Samuel Ekundayo fed the youths with inspiring words of life and of wisdom. Samuel E, profoundly called Ldp is an exciting young man who left the shore of Nigeria some years back, started his PhD degree at the age of 23!..and still matching on....dreaming on and on....He is such a young professional with a good spirit and sound mind who is so passionate of young people. Starting PhD at such a young age is a 'mirage' and almost impossible in this part of the world, and reasons why this is so, aren't far fetched, and i know those of us in here, can attest to it.....ASUU strike, unstable educational system, etc.

The decision to have him as our Guest Speaker was to inspire a cadre of young people. Already, enough has been said about the distractions our youths face in the society, the pressure to be a millionaire overnight without having to work for it, the negative influence of entertainments, technology, models etc.Truly, some of them have very bad role models and all these are eating deep into their lives and systems.....Most recently, due to the new education policy by the Lagos State Education Board, a very high percentage of SSS 2 students couldn't make it into SSS 3. Now, we have very few classes of SSS 3 in most public schools in Lagos State....and very few students, compared to what we used to have in time past...I know this might be a strategy to raise qualify students to write the next WAEC exams....let's hope things work out as planned. :) But, my concern in here, is that while most of these young people were demoted because they couldn't pass specified compulsory courses.....it's saddening that majority of these students REFUSED to go back to repeat their classes....the new policy hit them real hard and at such.....they find it difficult to repeat classes only because they didn't pass English and Mathematics at once!They choose not to register into their new classes and decided to completely stay away from school....

Now, the concern is ....what is the future of such kids....who have decided to stay off school....?

Yesterday, we were able to visit two schools and we were gladly met by their Principals, School Counselors and teachers, We sincerely hope that our objective of exposing these kids to successful young professionals like Samuel would help them think straight and know that whatsoever the mind can conceive, it can ACHIEVE.....but, they've got to DREAM ON....and keep their dreams alive....

Matters Arising.....79% fail English Language as NECO releases SSCE

At least 870,305 candidates who sat the June/July 2010 Secondary School Certificate examination conducted by the National Examination Council failed to get credit passes in English Language.

This represents 79 per cent of the 1, 113, 177 candidates that sat the examination this year. The remaining 21 per cent of the candidates, however, obtained credit passes in the subject.

The Registrar and Chief Executive, NECO, Prof. Promise Okpala, who disclosed this on Monday in Minna, Niger State while releasing the results, also said that out of the 1,113,177 candidates that sat for the Mathematics exanination, 838,031 or 24 per cent also failed the subject.

The statistics showing the performance of students by subjects indicated that only 245,890 candidates passed English Language with 1,434 distinctions and 244,456 credit passes, out of the 1,116,195 that sat the examination.

It also indicated that 66,519 candidates that sat English had their results cancelled while 66,260 candidates experienced the same fate in Mathematics.

Okpala, however, failed to give the total number of candidates whose performance would guarantee them admission into higher institutions, claiming that it was not the responsibility of the examination body to disclose such information.

The registrar also revealed that the examination body recorded 615,000 cases of malpractices, with Rivers State topping the list with 45,131 cases.

Kaduna State also followed with 41,878 cases; Enugu, 36,904 cases, Nasarawa, 35,510; and Lagos, with 31,904 cases. But the statistics showed that Bayelsa state recorded the least malpractices with 235 cases.

The commonest malpractices, according Okpala, were mass cheating, which recorded 452,027 cases; aiding, abetting, seeking and receiving help from non-candidates, 87,778; while 13,456 cases of cheating were detected at marking venue.

Okpala said the results were released 68 days after the last paper, adding that the approach was consistent with new standards set by the council. He said that 1,143,169 candidates registered for the examinations nationwide but that 1,132,357 candidates sat the examination.

He asserted that the council had put in place structures that ensured that appropriate standards and excellence were maintained in the examination process.

According to him, the structures guaranteed the security of question papers while the use of external monitors from tertiary institutions and officers of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps ensured discipline in the examination.

“Our examination question papers have continued to undergo reliable and valid processes of examination administration, monitoring and computation to arrive at credible certification,” he said.

6. Value the diverse economic, cultural, and religious traits of your mentee
7. Maintain regular contact with your mentoring provider organization to ensure effective mentoring practices

Thank you for your continued zeal to making the lives of Nigerian student better.

This is to inform you that I have since been mentoring "TF" of the 2nd/3rd mentoring session. He had to redo his Jamb and post jamb twice. I mentored him through the process, funded part of it and I am happy to say that we are closer to getting admision in Federal University Technology Akure this coming session.

I would like to suggest that mentoring shouldn't end at the point of taking the SSCE/WASCE exam but probably into College / Univeristy.
By doing that you are leaving a more last ing legacy.

Special EditionThis mentoring cycle is for a period of ONE MONTH. And, Our objective is to reach out to the unreached Mentees in our previous cycles. We want everychild to experience what it feels to have a Mentor, a Guide and a Friend. And if that is not passed on to a youngster, the youngster will get that experience on the street and it may not be a good experience and that youngster will head in the wrong direction.

So all of us, as citizens of this great country, have an obligation to not only raise our own children in this manner so that they can be a great new generation; we have an obligation to do this for all of our children, especially those children who don’t have this family structure, or whose family structure needs some help. And that’s why mentoring is so important. That’s why each and everyone one of us who has some time, some talent, and a willingness to get in the life of a child will volunteer to do that. It doesn’t mean that you become their parent; it just means you’re there for them.

Who Mentored Senator John McCain?

John McCain was first elected to represent the state of Arizona in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1982. He was elected to the Senate in 1985. In 1997, he was named one of the "25 Most Influential People in America" by Time magazine.

After graduating from the United States Naval Academy in 1958, McCain began a 22-year career as a naval aviator. In 1967, he was shot down over Vietnam and held as a prisoner-of-war in Hanoi for five-and-a-half years (1967-1973), much of it in solitary confinement. He retired from the Navy as a Captain in 1981. McCain's naval honors include the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Legion of Merit, Purple Heart, and Distinguished Flying Cross.

A former high school teacher of mine, Mr. William Ravenel, changed my life. I was the son of a naval officer who led a transient life. When I was at a boy's boarding

school of mostly southern well-off families, Mr. Ravenel gave me some moorings and a compass. He was a man of such admirable qualities. He had been a football player at Duke, he'd been in World War II in General Patten's tank corps, he still served in the Army Reserve, and he was a coach of a junior varsity team that I was on. Believe it or not, he made Shakespeare come alive. He used his classroom as not only a way to teach English, but also to teach values, and standards, and morals.

Mr. Ravenel was so admirable you wanted to be like him. And it wasn't just me, but the other boys as well. He seized the advantage to impart on us the honor code that was part of the school there, and the teaching of the various classics. He somehow imparted not just the telling of them, but the meaning of them. That had a great impact.

I discussed all manner of subjects with him, from sports to the stories of Somerset Maugham, from his combat experiences to my future. He was one of the few people at school to whom I confided that I was bound for the Academy and a Navy career, and to whom I confided my reservations about my destiny.

One instance in particular stands out in my memory as a moment when Mr. Ravenel's support really boosted my confidence. Training rules were a part of the honor code that you signed and agreed to observe. In the fall of my senior year, a member of the junior varsity football team had broken training and faced expulsion from the team. Mr. Ravenel called a team meeting during which players argued that the accused be dropped from the team and referred to the honor council. I didn't think that was fair. Since the student in question had, unlike the rest of us, chosen at the start of the year not to sign a pledge promising to abide by the training rules faithfully, I argued in favor of a less severe punishment.

Most of my teammates wanted to hang the guy. But I argued that since he had not been caught breaking training but instead had confessed the offense and expressed his remorse freely, his behavior was no less honorable than that of a student who signed the pledge and adhered to its provisions. My defense swayed the people in the room, about twenty or thirty guys. Mr. Ravenel closed the discussion by voicing support for my judgment.

After the meeting broke up, Mr. Ravenel approached me and shook my hand. With relief evident in his voice, he told me we had done the right thing, and thanked me for my efforts. He allowed that before the meeting he had been anxious about its outcome. He had hoped the matter would be resolved as it had been, but was uncertain it would. Still, he had not wanted to be the one who argued for exoneration; he wanted the decision to be ours and not his. He said he was proud of me. That was very important to me.

I have never forgotten the confidence his praise gave me. Nor did I ever forget the man who praised me. Years later, during the time I was imprisoned in Vietnam, I thought about Mr. Ravenel a lot. He was the one who reinforced in me the standards of honorable behavior. I was faced with several decisions and one in particular, would I accept an offer of the Vietnamese to go home early? I thought about the fact that Mr. Ravenel had been in combat in World War II and thus had a feel for what I was involved in. And I really believed, as I thought about it and considered it, that Mr. Ravenel wouldn't look favorably upon such a decision, because it was not an honorable one. So, I refused the offer...

After I returned home, Mr. Ravenel was the only person outside of my family who I wanted to see, because his approval or disapproval of me was probably more important than anyone else in my life, outside of my father. I felt he was someone to whom I could explain what happened to me, and who would understand. That is a high tribute to Mr. Ravenel.

I regret that I was never able to pay him that tribute. Upon return I found that my mentor had passed on. Mr. Ravenel had died of a heart attack two years before my release from prison. He lived for only 53 years. His early death was a great loss to his family, friends, and students, and to everyone who had been blessed with his company; a loss I found difficult to accept.

Were William B. Ravenel the only person I remembered from high school, I would credit those days as among the best of my life. He was an inspirational man, and I wasn't the only one that he inspired. His influence over my life, while perhaps not apparent to most who have observed its progress, was more important and more benevolent than that of any other person save members of my family.

I think that a mentor can help you through difficult periods, help you see the difference between right and wrong. The world is more complicated for children today than it ever was when I was growing up. A mentor can provide you with the kind of idealism that you can look up to and attempt to emulate. What I believe young people find very useful is someone that they can contact and interact with, and frankly express their doubts and their concerns and their questions. We have found through scientific study that a mentor can dramatically impact a young person's life. I knew that Mr. Ravenel had a great impact on me. But I don't think I really understood how deeply he impacted me until I was in prison, because it was his example I looked to when I was tempted to do something which was less than honorable.

On 17th July, Resource Sharing Network - gathered together a few mentees to distribute sports' supplies to an orphanage and a school for children with hearing difficulties - the finances and arrangements were made first by the Ulster Teachers' Union, Carol, Kevin and Gerry - the endeavours of Tosin Anu and the commitment of the mentees.

The children we shared with will be enriched but the mentees will have gained much to bring meaning to their lives. These are quality days that are adorned by the happiness of children.

Good day!

This is to intimate us that the next Youths Mentoring Cycle commences
in a few months time -September, 2009 while the current cycle ends in
August. The reason for this is to create more rooms for other
less-priviledged youths in the Society, especially youths in Public
Senior Secondary Schools, Class SSS 3.

To our Mentors who have patiently waited to be paired up with a
suitable Mentee, but, couldn't get any - We sincerely apologise for
these lapses. We assure you that in our next cycle, we hope to reach
out to more students in other fields than Sciences!

The First Phase of our Mentoring Programme has enlightened us and
prepared us act right in the next cycle, so that the best can be given

This is my picture with Farouk after my Guinness Marathon yesterday.
Mock exams are pretty tasking but Farouk is really preparing hard.

They have English and Maths this week and hope to complete the mock next week.

"The name of my Mentor is Tola (not real name). He works with SCB, Victoria Island. We have discussed three times. The first time he contacted me, he introduced himself to me and told me everything about himself and I also introduced myself to him.

The second time he contacted me, he told me about the "Millionaire's capsule" and he promised to come to my house the following week.

The third time, he came to visit me at my house, I introduced him to my parents and they were very happy to meet him. So, we discussed about the Millionaire's Capsule (Motivational talk) he told me about earlier.

The first Millionaire's capsule we discussed about was about how to achieve my goal and he gave me an assignment that I should write down my goals!"

You might want to know these facts:

Today marks the third week that Public School Teachers began the Nation wide strike and our students/Mentees are greatly affected!
WAEC/NECO exams start in less than 3months! - So close! Hence, we've got few weeks to help motivate, inspire, encourage and assist those young people. They really do need you badly. . . . . . . .And, you can never tell how far your timely assistance would do in touching and transforming their lives positively. A whole lot of them are like Pilgrims without Direction/Map to their final Destination.

Someone "unknown" has volunteered to help tutor these youths every Saturday. He commenced last week Saturday, 7th of March, 2009. Presently, not all the student are aware of this arrangement, hence, we would appreciate it if you could pass on this informaion to your respective Mentees.
We've got some new Members, Join us as we welcome the following Mentors into our Mentoring Team!! They are:

Other suggested ways of communicating with your Mentees are e-mailing, texting, phone calls, visitation etc. And you might want to utilise this period of strike to effectively engage them in assignments, activities to improve their academic skills etc.
Our target grade expected from the Mentee is at least a WAEC result of 5 As and 3 Cs. Sure this isn't too much to ask for!!! As this would qualify them for the CTY Awards 2009! which comes up in December, 2009 by His grace!

Would You Be A Mentor?

This is a Mentoring program where young people in Secondary Schools are mentored through tutoring and exciting activities after school. It's specifically designed to improve on the academic performances of young people!

1. Must demonstrate maturity and leadership skills
2. Must demonstrate patience, sensibility, confidence, social skills and reliability.
3. Must be willing and ready to mentor any individual regardless of race or socio economic class.
4. Must be able to communicate with his or her Protege(e) at least 2 times in a week via phone calls, e-mentoring(emails) or Physical presences etc.
5. Must be able to help improve on the academic performances of these young ones, etc.

Suggested Ways of Communicating with these Young People are:
1. SMS -texting
2. Phone Call
3. Electronic-mail
4. Physical Presence -Visitation
5. etc.

Onofe O.O Orode is a student of OGS. Presently, he is in SSS 3A class of Science. Born on the 12th of February, 1992. His best subjects are Chemistry, Mathematics and Agricultural Science.

He looks forward to studying Agriculture at the University of Agric., Abeokuta (UNAAD).

His future ambition is to "rule the world but first develop Nigeria then win 7Nobel prizes and pay Nigeria’s debt, to become Nigeria’s greatest ever and youngest President at age of 45!”. He needs assistance in Physics.

More Ways to be involved!

These are ways you can help. . . .
Be Our Mentor You can volunteer to be a mentor to one of the students in Secondary Schools. The Youths Mentoring Youths scheme runs for a period of 6months after which there is a re-cycle. Each member of the Mentor group helps to develop our work, finding time weekly to interact with the student, providing us with their point of view on how to improve the academic performance of the students. Please, feel free to be our Mentor. Give the gift of you. Volunteer.

Be a Friend of Mentors
Join our network of Friends by making an annual contribution that allows us to connect with a young person or child, making them part of our Mentor group. All friends receive updates on our work and news of events and activities. By becoming a Friend of Mentor you give children of all ages the opportunity to join our Mentor group. As a member of the Mentor group, they will receive regular information and interactive materials on Education.

Be Our Tutor
One of the steps we have deployed to improve on the academic performances of these young people (especially the SSS 3 students) is to organize weekly Tutorial for them in preparation for their WAEC exams. Hence, we need volunteers who would give an hour or two each week/end to teach them in basic subjects such as Mathematics, English, Biology, Economics, Chemistry, Account etc. Please, feel free to be our Tutor. Give the gift of you. Volunteer.

Pay Our Tutor
In absence of tutors as volunteer, we shall be hiring some fellows who would help meet the academic needs of the students. And, peradventure, you know someone who might be of help in rendering such effective tutorial session. Please do not hesitate to contact us. But, we need volunteers to help pay the bills and stipends. A monthly sum of N2,000 has been agreed on. For our account details, you can contact us.

Be Our Mentor

Our Passion
There is a voice crying out for help amongst our young people, the closer you get to them, the clearer you hear their plea. . . .They need your help; they need your words of advice and encouragement to push-on despite all odds!

We believe that the recent WAEC result wherein 83% of these young people failed woefully would not have been so, if there was a You and I standing in the gap as a Mentor! We, at the Resource Sharing Network have heard their cry and decided to step in and make a change! But, we cannot achieve this fate without your assistance and concerted effort as an Individual or Corporate entity. Hence, would you be our Mentor? Would you help in Passing on the Baton of Excellence to these young people?

Our Strategy
Each student (Mentee) will be paired one-on-one with an experienced, successful graduate (Mentor) that best suits their area of interest to serve as friends and role models, helping them gain greater self-confidence. Mentors meet/call Mentees for duration of four times each week in a structured format and assist them with school or home work, take the time to listen to their problems at home and family and support them with any problems they encounter in the process they instill self confidence and an ability to solve their own problems! Additionally, Mentors are enjoined to organize Free Tutorial Classes for Senior Secondary School Students only.

Enrolment into the program per cycle will be limited to 50 students from some selected schools in Lagos State. Officially, Mentoring exercise will elapse for a period of 6months after which a new cycle commences.

Our Target
Presently, our targets are students in Senior Secondary Schools (SSS 3 students) within Lagos Metropolis.

Our Motivation
One of those things that motivate us is the feedback we often get from these young people. Example of such is this recent text message:

“Good day, thanks for the text Message, I just checked my NECO and I got 9 Credits, I don’t how much I go thank you!!!! A Student in Lokoja, Kogi State.”

Our Need
We need committed Young leaders who would volunteer as Mentors to help these young people by motivating them, encouraging them, assisting them in their academics and helping them gain greater self-confidence. And, that is why we need you!

About Us

Resource Sharing Network (RsN) is a not-for-profit, Youth-Led organization which is set out to improve the academic performance of students in Secondary Schools, and to restore conscientiousness to school work and activities amongst young people. The program provides a platform for learning through our mentoring scheme, Coaching Classes, Career Talks, Leadership Programs, Ethics, etc.

RsN offers a unique mentoring leadership development program which pairs the disadvantaged youths with matured and responsible Graduates, Corps members, and other young professionals who are experienced and successful in their chosen field of study. Improve academic performance of students in secondary schools
To awaken the sense of social responsibility and leadership of young people by exposing them to some of the most pressing social problems of our country.
To mobilize Young People to positive changes this allows them to affect cultural, systemic, and personal transformation in their own lives and the lives of others.
